Proposed closure of our post office

Postby witsend on Thu Jun 12, 2008 5:53 pm

The village residents already bear the brunt (and perhaps possible long term ill health) of three mobile phone masts (which some of us objected to), the monstrosity that is the government (both national and local) imposed Tetra mast (which many of us objected to), and the loss of our village school (again against the objections raised from residents). Although acknowledging that these decisions have (seemingly) been made by differing organisations, it does lead one to suspect that in this area of Pembrokeshire, Penally has been and is still being singled out. So we are now faced with the proposed decision to close the village post office services upon which many of us rely on.
I am concerned that this is yet another government imposed decision that will ultimately rank alongside such shortsightedness as Beeching's 'streamlining' of our railway system, and Thatcher's closure of the vast majority of our deep mines.
Having taken part in the Tetra mast public inquiry process (farce?) I am unsure whether the proposed closure is again an issue on which the ink is already dry or whether there is a real opportunity to change minds. Whilst I suspect the former, I hope that the latter could be achieved with concerted effort and the right arguments (whatever they may be) properly evidenced and provided to the decision makers. So I post this response not with any clear idea of how to go about achieving the overturn of the proposal/decision but to seek the views of the community (county and parish councilors, residents, businesses and visitors) as to whether (i) this is yet another 'fight' that we should collectively undertake, and if yes, (ii) how we get together to decide the most effective and convincing argument/strategy. Time really is of the essence if this is to be achieved.
